Cupping is a very popular therapy in the Traditional Chinese Medicine in which a local suction point is created on the skin using cups. Practitioners believe that this mobilizes blood and “Qi flow” as well as a physiological balance in order to promote natural healing of the body. Suction is created using heat (fire) or mechanical devices (hand or electrical pumps).
Cups are used on softer tissue that can form a good seal with the edge of the cup, usually on your back. Skin marking is common after the cups are removed, but it disappears quickly. The discoloration left by the cups is normally from bruising, especially when moving the cups around breaking down muscle fiber. However, usually treatments are not painful, even though the marks may look painful. Remember to drink plenty of water following your treatment to help flush the toxins lifted from the muscles.
Note 1: Cupping therapy should be avoided by pregnant or menstruating women, people with metastatic cancer and people with bone fractures or muscle spasms
Note 2: 24 hours after your session, avoid heavy exercise, hot tub, sauna, steam room, hot bath or shower, sunbathing and heavy meals
