There is nothing like walking around with a local! Hire an English speaking guide for a day that can take you to wherever you wish to go.
Your English speaking guide will meet you at your hotel's lobby, then you will discuss what you want to do and where you want to go. Your guide will put together an 8 hour itinerary for the day.
You can try local transportation such as taxi, bus or metro. In Shanghai it is very easy to use public transportation and taxis are not expensive starting at 14 Chinese Yuan for the first 2 kilometers.
Please note that entrance fees to the attractions visited are not included and will need to pay for them at the gate.
Where you can go?
Start at the old city of Shanghai and the Yu gardens area. The old city bazaar is one of the best places to get a glimpse of old Shanghai and the classic Chinese gardens. From there you can go to visit East Nanjing road - the longest shopping pedestrian road in the world. You can walk all the way to the Bund to get a glimpse of old and new Shanghai on the Huangpu river. Walk down on the bund to take in the history of the old British Area and see the amazing view of new Shanghai. Once you reach the dock on the Bund you can take a ferry to cross the river like a local!
