The Jews of Shanghai is a remarkable story that many don't know. Book this tour and explore the history and stories of the influence Jewish people had on this city.
This tour will take you back in time to three different periods in Chinese and world history. Lead by a professional tour guide, you will step back to Shanghai of mid-19th century and start the journey of Jewish Shanghai.
You will visit:
* The Peace Hotel on the Bund
* Ohel Moishe former Synagogue and today's Shanghai Jewish Refugees museum
* The old Ghetto streets
* Zhoushan Park
* Former site of Jewish Distribution Committee (JDC) building in Shanghai.
The tour will start at the Peace Hotel on the Bund, where you will hear a short background of how Shanghai changed, from a fisherman village, to the Manhattan of China. Then you will dive into the history of the Iraqi Jews that were the first to discover Shanghai's economic potential.
You will continue the tour on the Bund where you will hear about the 2nd wave of Jews that arrived to Shanghai, this time from Russia. You will hear about why they arrived in Shanghai and where they lived. Later on you will visit the Shanghai Jewish Refugees museum.
In the museum you will hear about the German and Austrian Jews that arrived in Shanghai at the end of the 1930's and how they survived tough times when the Japanese took over the city. You will also learn about the 4th wave that arrived to Shanghai - the Lithuanian Jews and their story during WW2.
You will finish the tour by walking at the former "Ghetto" of the Jews in Hongkou district. This tour will not only take you through the history of the Jews of Shanghai but also will provide a deep understanding of the city's History.
