Mudu is a well known ancient water town south of the Yangtze river. Located not far from Suzhou, Mudu is a good "off beaten path" destination to explore local culture on a one day tour .
A bit about Mudu Water Town
Mudu is an ancient landscape water town, located to the southwest of Suzhou City, and is the only garden water town in south east China area. There are more than 30 private gardens from the Ming and Qing Dynasties times in this small town. Not a lot of travelers know about Mudu, which makes it a real gem, less affected by tourism and modernity.
Take a 1 hour drive to Mudu water town, from Suzhou. After arrival, you will visit Yan garden first. This garden used to be the house of Shen De Qian, a renowned scholar from Suzhou during the Qing dynasty. Not many people know, but in the old days, Suzhou used to be center of culture and business in this area. Much before Shanghai came to be the metropolitan it is today.
Continue to visit Hongying house, the favourite place on Emperor Qianlong from the Qing dynasty.
You can decide to visit other gardens according to your interest and time.
Last stop, you will have a walk along the Shantang ancient street, and back to Suzhou!
