Shangri-La is a Tibetan town nestled in between snow mountains in the spurs of the Tibetan plateau and is named after the legendary paradise. Book this Shangrila and Shika Mountain Tour to explore the area in depth, enjoy stunning views and experience a bit of the Tibetan culture.
We will start our day in the local market of Shangri-La, which offers smoked yak cheese, bells, Buddhist ritual objects and many kinds of Tibetan food. After the visit we will drive to the biggest monastery in Yunnan province, Songzalin monastery. The monastery was built in the 17th century by the 5th Dalai Lama. In its heyday was home to more than 3,000 monks but was destroyed during the "Cultural Revolution". It was later restored and now there are 500 monks of the "yellow hats" order who live there. The structure is reminiscent of the famous "Potala" in Lhasa and therefore is also called "the little Potala". We will tour the huge place between the Buddhist characters that are surrounding it and will view the beautiful mountains from the top of the monastery.
Then we will continue to mount Shika, which is about 7 km west to Shangrila and reaches a height of 4,500 meters above sea level. We will take a 40-minute cable car to the top of the mountain, where we will walk in the comfortable paths between the mountain peaks and enjoy the unique scenery that is typical to the Tibetan plateau, large grasslands and multiple Yak herds, as well as the other mountains surrounding Shangrila.
After the cold winter months the mountains around still are covered with snow, what makes it the best season to visit. And in the summer months there is an amazing view from the mountain top the beautiful flowering valleys.
Our way down will also be by cable car and then return to the city to the end of our tour.
