There are two types of people in this world – those who run from the cold… and those who run towards it. If you’re someone who falls in that second category, we’ve got a list of the six best winter holiday destinations in China. Check it out and start planning your dream China winter wonderland trip today!
1. Harbin Winter
#1 on this list is hands down Harbin. Nestled all the way up in Northeastern China, this “Oriental Moscow” is known for its world-renowned Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival. The world’s largest annual ice sculpture festival isn’t the only reason to visit this city – its beautiful winter landscapes accented by the traditional Russian architecture and the massive lighted sculptures of the festival will take you to a world somewhere in between Anna Karenina and the year 2057.
2. Huangshan (The Yellow Mountains)
The Yellow Mountains are known as some of the most beautiful mountains in all of China during the warmer seasons, but they become a whole new experience in the wintertime. The evergreen trees dotted all over the mountain tend to retain snow and ice so well that they turn the landscape into a dreamy movie scene. Add the sea of clouds and a sunrise or sunset, and you have the recipe for a picture-perfect landscape.
3. Jilin Winter
This less-known city is a frequent destination for tourists looking for a beautiful and less-crowded winter wonderland. Situated on the banks of the Songhua River, the combination of warm river water and the cold air temperature in the wintertime means everything on the banks of the river gets coated in a glassy sheet of ice. In fact, a new festival happens every year in January to celebrate the beginning of “rime” season in Jilin.
4. Beijing Winter
Beijing classic China destination is far enough north to be home to ice skating, skiing, and all-around beautiful winter scenery. The Great Wall is something to behold when coated in snow and surrounded by a breathtaking white landscape as far as the eye can see.
5. Jiuzhaigou Winter
A UNESCO World Heritage site, this valley in Sichuan on the edge of the Tibetan plateau is known for its beautiful fall scenery and blue lakes. Fall isn’t the only good season here, as the colors that pop out in every direction are even better when complemented by a light dusting of powdery white snow.
6. Hong Kong Winter
This last destination on our list earns its spot as a less traditional winter wonderland, but it is a wonderland for sure. For those looking to get into the holiday spirit, Hong Kong is probably the best Asia winter destination. The long colonial history of this city means it harbors a lot of Christmas and New Year spirit, so it’s not difficult to find extravagant holiday displays all over the city…. and a delicious traditional Christmas meal as well.
