The Simple Supplements
Take a walking tour: Sometimes the best way to take in your surroundings is to walk through them. Take a closer look at architecture, local spots, and maybe run into something you might not have caught on a tour bus.
Take a cooking class: This can be one of the most fun ways to connect with local culture. Your dumplings might not be the prettiest, but with the help of your chef, they’ll be delicious.
Try the local bars and clubs: no doubt the best way to see what day to day life is like and how locals and expats choose to unwind after a long week.
Check the local art scene: Depending on where you are, this could mean calligraphy, painting or sculpture parks.
Try the local Metro: You’d be surprised how quickly you’ll get the hang of navigating multiple lines, and you may even save traffic time— watch out for crowds though.
Download some of the local Apps: Since so many of the Apps you are used to are basically blocked try downloading some local ones. We recommend you start with Wechat. You will be amazed by how much useful information you can find there.
The more adventurous choices
Study Chinese:Download any number of apps to help you get started, or find a language partner to teach you some basics to help you during your travels.
Try Kong Fu or Taichi: You don’t necessarily have to sign up for a class— for Taichi, see if you can find a local practicing in a park in the early morning.
Volunteer in the rural areas: This takes planning ahead of time and establishing definite dates and expectations, but there’s no better way to experience and contribute at the same time.
Stay at a local family’s home:Inexpensive, but more importantly the most effective way to fully immerse yourself in Chinese day to day life. You’ll get a glimpse at home life, traditions, and super authentic food.
